Overview
Anyone who uses Pesticides (approved for use in Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry) in the course of their job is legally required to have a City & Guilds / NPTC Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Pesticides.
In order to achieve competence training is usually required. There are 2 strands to the training:
- Foundation Module (PA1): Everyone must do this
- Application Modules (PA2a, PA6a etc): The candidate chooses the most appropriate module

Courses
Pa1 – Foundation Module
Course Content: Legislation, Interpreting Product Label, Personal Safety & Contamination, Pesticide and Container Storage, Disposals, Record Keeping, Environmental Factors.
Duration 1 Day
Course Assessment: Multiple choice on line assessment.
Duration 1 Hour
This module must be passed before a candidate can progress to the application modules.
Pa2a - Boom Sprayer (tractor mounted)
Course Content:
Knowledge of the sprayer, Interpret product label, Check the sprayer, Calibrate the sprayer, Prepare and add pesticide to tank, carry out an environmental risk assessment, Apply the pesticide, Cleaning and Records.
Duration 1 Day
Course Assessment:
One to one questioning with practical application by an approved City & Guilds / NPTC Assessor.
Duration 3 Hours
Pa6a - Knapsack sprayer
Course Content:
Knowledge of the sprayer and nozzles, Interpret product label, Check the sprayer, Calibrate the sprayer, Prepare and add pesticide to tank, carry out an environmental risk assessment, apply the pesticide, Spot treatments, Cleaning and Records.
Duration 1 Day
Course Assessment: - One to one questioning with practical application by an approved City & Guilds / NPTC Assessor.
Duration 2 Hours
