Overview
Anyone applying pesticides (approved for use in Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry) in the course of their job must have a City and Guilds NPTC certificate of competence in the Safe Use of Pesticides.
In order to achieve competence, training is usually required. There are 2 strands to the training:
- Foundation Unit - PA1: Everyone must do this
- Application Module - PA2a; PA6a and so on: The candidate chooses the most appropriate module
Who is the course for?
Farmers, Growers and Foresters applying pesticide as part of their jobs.
Courses
Foundation Unit – Pa1
Course Content: Legislation, Interpreting Product Label, Personal Safety & Contamination, Pesticide and Container Storage, Disposals, Record Keeping, Environmental Factors.
Duration: 1 Day of training followed by a 1 hour assessment on a separate day. The assessment is by multiple choice and is done on a computer.
This unit must be passed before a candidate can progress to the application modules.
Application Module - Pa2a Boom Sprayer
Course Content: Knowledge of the sprayer, Interpret product label, Check the sprayer, Calibrate the sprayer, Prepare and add pesticide to tank, Environmental risk assessment, Apply pesticide, Cleaning and Records.
Duration: 1 Day of training followed by a 3 hour assessment on a separate day. The assessment consists of one to one questioning; calibration of the sprayer and spraying.
Application Module - Pa6a - Knapsack Sprayer
Course Content: Knowledge of the sprayer and nozzles, Interpret product label, Check the sprayer, Calibrate the sprayer, Prepare and add pesticide to tank, Environmental risk assessment, Apply pesticide, Spot treatments, Cleaning and Records.
Duration: 1 Day of training followed by a 2 hour assessment on a separate day. The assessment consists of one to one questioning; calibration of the sprayer and spraying.
