Veterinary nurses celebrate at Greenmount

In the third ceremony of its kind, approximately 30 students received various awards in Animal Nursing and Veterinary Nursing at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise’s Greenmount Campus recently.  The College is the only centre in Northern Ireland to offer the Veterinary Nursing course approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and competition for places is high.

John Fay, College Director, congratulated all of the students on their achievements, which he said were the culmination of months and indeed years of hard work and commitment. He went on to say that “the latter trait never ceases to amaze me.  I have never come across more dedicated students than the veterinary nurses in all my years in land based education.  Many of our students travel considerable distances to attend their classes and their attendance records are exemplary.  Several among them have given up professional careers to retrain as veterinary nurses and, because of the difficulties in obtaining work with recognized Training Practices many have had to relocate.”

Mr Bert Houston, Chief Veterinary Officer, DARDNI, presented the awards.  He said he was delighted to have been asked to present the awards and agreed with John Fay on the commitment shown by veterinary nursing students.  He went on to stress the important role veterinary nurses play in supporting vets and praised the care and love they lavish on their patients.

Alma Moffett from Monaghan was first overall on the Animal Nursing Assistant programme, achieving a Distinction grade and the Veterinary Surgeon’s Supply Company Cup.  Julie Scrimgeour from Belfast was first overall on the NVQ Level 2 programme and received the Merial Cup, while Kitty Venney from Downpatrick was first overall on the NVQ Level 3 programme and received the Norbrook Cup.
