Design Success for Greenmount Florists
The Northern Ireland Regional Heat of the Worldskills UK Floristry Competition was the highlight of a recent Open Afternoon at CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus. Sixteen young florists from throughout Northern Ireland spent the day creating designs on the theme “Bridal Accessories with a touch of the Orient!” Competitors had to create a bridal bouquet (and sketch the style of dress it was to accompany), a headdress, body adornment and an arrangement for the cake table, using the wonderful selection of fresh flowers and foliages provided. Amy Holdsworth, Armagh, represented CAFRE in the Intermediate Section and was delighted to win first place with her bridal bouquet. ‘We didn’t know what materials we had to work with until we went into the hall but we had a lovely selection – including calla lilies, Akito roses and anthuriums – all in perfect condition and ideal for a wedding with an oriental theme’ said Amy. Overall winners were Ciara McNamee, All Seasons Florists, Dunmurray, (Intermediate Section) and Emily Martin, Finishing Touches, Dungannon, (Advanced Section) who are both studying floristry at Greenmount Campus. Worldskills UK Floristry Competition Co-ordinator, Kate Pepper, York, judged the competition with leading local florist, Theresa Quinn, Pomeroy. I’ve been delighted to see such enthusiasm and commitment among competitors at Greenmount on this, my first visit to Northern Ireland. UK Skills competitions aim to raise standards of training at work and I know all the competitors will build on their achievements here today.’ said Kate. There are eight regional heats of the competition being held throughout the UK so winners of the Northern Ireland heat will now have to wait and see if they are among the top scorers who will be invited to compete in the National Final at the RHS Show at Tatton Park in July.
